Bond Falls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
During a recent trip to my parent’s cabin on the lake in the Northwoods of Wisconsin, we took a trip across the state line to marvel at Bond Falls in Michigan.
This majestic waterfall is on the Ontonagon River near Paulding in the famed Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Having enjoyed our time at Cataract Falls in Indiana recently, my daughters were excited to go chasing another waterfall!
Majestic Sights and Sounds
I’m a sucker for waterfalls! The rushing sound of the water, the cool wind and gentle spray on my face, and the beauty of nature bring peace to my soul. Bond Falls meets all my criteria for a top-notch waterfall, and then some.
Bond falls includes one main drop that is 50 feet in height and several small cascading waterfalls.
After parking in the main lot, it is just a short walk along a wooden walkway to reach the base of the waterfall and several amazing vantage points. Allow at least 30 minutes to take in the beauty of the waterfall from numerous spots as you try to get the most Instagram-worthy shot.
There are 6 viewing platforms including a few spots to venture off the walkway down to the water’s edge for even more picturesque angles.
The wooden walkway continues around both sides of the falls where the hiking trail loop picks up.
Take a Hike
For those adventure seekers up for a bit more fun, I strongly suggest walking the nearly 1-mile trail around the falls. Allow another hour to make the loop and truly enjoy your time at the falls.
On this trip, my parents opted to wait in the car, but my teenage girls and I eagerly wound our way through the beautiful wooded trail. At times the trail seemed a bit hard to follow, but as long as we stuck close to the falls and the sound of flowing water we never got far off course.
Due to recent rain, there was mud and slippery rock to navigate in spots but that just added to the fun.
There are some stairs and a bit of steep terrain making the path a bit of a challenge for someone with mobility issues, but otherwise, the trail is only moderately challenging.
At the top of the falls, you will find a dam as well as more parking and a platform perfect for picnicking. Pop in the Outpost for ice cream or a souvenir.
I suggest taking your time on the trail. At just under 1 mile in length, it won’t take long to make the loop, but you will want to make plenty of stops to admire the falls from every angle. And don’t forget your camera! But hold on tight, lest it gets swept away in the flowing waters!
