Exploring the Hoosier State

I have lived in Indiana most of my life, so I’ve explored a good portion of the Hoosier State. Yet I’m always finding new activities, restaurants, and museums to experience on my home turf.

Recently I started flipping through “100 Things to Do in Indiana Before You Die” and instantly had a whole new list of fun Hoosier adventures to add to my travel bucket list.

This is a must-have book for travelers who love the Midwest!

“100 Things to Do in Indiana Before You Die” was published by Reedy Press and was written by my friend and fellow travel blogger, Jamie Ward. You can check out all of Jamie’s adventures (in Indiana and beyond) on her blog, Cornfields and High Heels.

If you are under the misguided impression that Indiana is mostly cornfields and not a worthwhile destination on your travel itinerary, Jamie’s book will quickly prove that myth wrong! Jamie and I can both attest to the fact that there are some fabulous hidden gems in Indiana that the typical tourist has yet to explore.

While I have no intention of spoiling the book for you, I thought I’d share some of the Indiana destinations and activities in Jamie’s book that I have experienced myself. And then I’ll let you know a few of the Indiana adventures that are still on my to-do list. I hope this whets your appetite for a trip to Indiana…and inspires you to pick up your own copy of “100 Things to Do in Indiana Before You Die.”

These are 10 things from Jamie’s book that I have done and encourage you to do as well!

#21 Throw Back a Frosty Root Beer at the Tripple XXX Family Restaurant

I’m a proud Purdue graduate and you can’t spend four years on the West Lafayette campus and not make at least a few trips to Tripple XXX. Don’t let the name fool you, this is a very family-friendly restaurant! Kids and adults of all ages will enjoy throwing back one of their signature frosty root beers in this iconic college town diner.

While you are there make sure you also indulge in one of their unique burgers named after famous Boilermakers. The Duane Purvis burger, complete with peanut butter, is surprisingly delicious..and messy, like all good burgers should be!

#26 Heighten Your Senses at the Indiana State Fair

The Midwest is known for it’s sensational state fairs, and Indiana’s is one not to miss. I’ve gone to the Indiana State Fair just about every year of my 40+ years on this earth, so it’s safe to say it is an annual tradition of mine.

The food takes center stage at the Indiana State Fair with new deep-fried cuisine and culinary delights eaten off of a stick being the highlights. Each year I make sure I visit the Dairy Barn for one of their signature shakes or a grilled cheese sandwich. Someone in my crew usually buys a funnel cake or elephant ear and offers me a bite. Lemon shake-ups, pineapple whips, and tenderloin sandwiches are just a few of the other state fair eats you’ll likely catch me chowing down on!

In addition to fabulous food, the Indiana State Fair also hosts tons of free concerts, 4-H displays, exhilarating rides, plenty of farm animals, and interactive exhibits galore. The Indiana State fair typically runs for about three weeks every August, so be sure to work this into your later summer travel itinerary.

#31 Drive Through Indiana’s Largest Festival in Parke County

There are nearly 100 historic covered bridges in Indiana, and more than 30 of them can be found in Parke County. While you can tour these impressive bridges any time of the year, Parke County highlights its architectural masterpieces every October with a massive 10 day festival.

The Covered Bridge Festival is actually Indiana’s largest festival, and for many visitors, it has become an anticipated annual outing every fall. The festival showcases Parke County’s many covered bridges and also features tons of arts and crafts booths and an array of food vendors, all set amidst a colorful backdrop of fall foliage.

Be prepared for crowds as the word is out about this fantastic festival…and be sure to pack your patience!

#38 Admire Indiana’s Largest Waterfall at Cataract Falls

cataracts falls

While I don’t consider myself an avid hiker or adrenaline junkie, I do enjoy strolling through the great outdoors as I appreciate the beauty of nature. And my favorite hikes include breathtaking waterfalls.

Cataract Falls in Owen County offers not one, but two picturesque waterfalls. There is a one-mile trail between the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls that I have taken numerous times and find enjoyable in all seasons. Both falls also have parking lots nearby so even those with mobility issues or anyone not interested in hiking can still view both Instagram-worthy falls.

Cataract Falls is actually part of the Lieber State Recreation Area, which is just one of the many Indiana State Park properties. While I haven’t explored all of the Indiana State Parks, I have visited my fair share. So here’s a bonus to my list of 10…check out #46 on Jamie’s list and Trot the Trails at Turkey Run State Park as well as #37 and Dare to Do the 3 Dune Challenge at Indiana Dunes National Park.

#54 Ride the Coasters and Waves at Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari

Midwest summers are synonymous with family-friendly theme parks, and Indiana has a unique one that is definitely worth the price of admission.

Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari is located in Santa Claus, Indiana. True to the town’s name, Santa-themed everything can be found around every corner in this southern Indiana community.

I find Holiday World to be a perfectly manageable theme park that has plenty to do for all ages and levels of thrill-seeking. Whether you choose to stay dry or add the waterpark into your itinerary you will find that the price of admission includes some great freebies, including free soft drinks and sunscreen.

I love Holiday World, but even more importantly, my teens love it…so you can rest assured it is a kid-approved destination!

#64 Discover the Secret Hiding Spot in the Levi & Catharine Coffin House

levi and catharine coffin historic site

On a recent trip to Richmond, Indiana my mom and I got to tour the Levi & Catharine Coffin House and Interpretive Center, and it left a lasting impression on both of us.

Here you can take a guided tour through the historic home of this brave couple who provided shelter for slaves seeking freedom as part of the Underground Railroad. This tour is a must for history buffs, but it is also a worthwhile excursion for both children and adults as we can all benefit by learning about the trials and triumphs of those who came before us.

#65 Cruise the Canal on the Delphi

canal boat

I’ll admit I only learned about this Hoosier destination last summer when my brother went camping in Delphi, Indiana. He invited the extended family to visit his campsite and spend some time at the Wabash and Erie Canal.

The highlight of our visit was a ride on the old-time Canal Boat…which almost didn’t happen due to the weather. Luckily it cleared up enough to start our voyage and it added to our excitement when we had to wait out an impending storm in the boat house at the end of our ride!

As exciting as the weather made our canal excursion, the canal boat ride is actually a very smooth and peaceful experience as you glide down the waterway. This is another great family-friendly Indiana activity.

#66 Reflect at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion

Jesus is Laid in the Tomb
Jesus is Laid in the Tomb

If you are looking to grow stronger in your Christian faith through your travels or simply want to learn more about the life of Jesus Christ, then plan to spend a few hours at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion in Northwest Indiana.

I have completed the prayer walk at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion twice in the past few years and found it incredibly moving both times. Walk the serene outdoor path and stop at each of the sculptures and listen to the audio narration describing Jesus’ last days.

The fact that there is no cost to visit and there is a massive gift shop just makes a stop at the Shrine of Christ’s Passion even more enticing!

#80 Walk Through the Underground Ruins of the Catacombs

It has been a few years since I ventured to Indianapolis’ underground, but I’m glad to hear this unique experience is still possible.

With a trusty tour guide and a bit of courage, you can climb down into the Catacombs beneath the City Market and the bustling city above.  You will hear tales about the goings-on of this underworld long ago and can decide for yourself what might be fact or fiction.

I believe tours happen year-round, but I can imagine they are especially popular around Halloween as there is definitely a spooky aspect to the Catacombs. Enter if you dare!!

#81 Stroll Through the Quaint Village of Nashville

nashville shopping

If you know me at all, you know I love shopping and small towns (among many other things)! Nashville, Indiana is one of the most popular small towns in Indiana, and for good reason.

Nashville boasts 8 blocks jam-packed with the cutest shops, restaurants, candy shops, wineries, and bed and breakfasts you can imagine. It is the perfect setting for a girls’ getaway or a romantic weekend (provided your significant other likes shopping).

I’ve ventured to Nashville numerous times and I always come home with several unique gifts and the desire to return again soon.

Now it’s time to share 10 items still on my Hoosier To-Do List from Jamie’s book.

#15 Celebrate with Charcuterie at Golfo Di Napoli

Thanks, Jamie…this is one I had not heard of, but you had me at charcuterie and authentic Italian cuisine! I may not be heading to Italy anytime soon, but I’m making a beeline for Warren, Indiana to check out Golfo Di Napoli.

#27 Get Artsy at the Bob Ross Experience

I love getting crafty and Bob Ross is an artistic icon, so this Muncie, Indiana attraction easily made my to-do list.

#30 Ride the French Lick Scenic Railway

Wining and dining aboard a train while gliding through scenic southern Indiana…yes, please! And if I’m really wanting to indulge I may also spring for #57 and Escape to Luxury at the Historic French Lick Resort.

#33 Dance in Delight at the Elkhart Jazz Festival

Having just spent a fabulous few days in Elkhart County, I’m ready to return and experience even more of what this community has to offer, including the famed Jazz Festival held every June.

#50 Interact with the Pigs at Oinking Acres Farm Rescue and Sanctuary

I have no idea why I haven’t made it to Oinking Acres yet given that it is practically in my backyard! I plan to take my daughters soon as I know they will love it…but no, we will not be bringing a pig home!

#58 Honor Eva’s Story at Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center

After watching the documentary and touring the new exhibit at the Indiana Historical Society on Eva Kor, I definitely need to make a trip to Terre Haute to learn more about this extraordinary woman.

#69 Wander Through the Abandoned Rose Island Amusement Park

Housed within Charlestown State Park, wandering through an abandoned amusement park sounds like a really fun way to spice up my next hiking adventure!

#72 Tour the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Factory

I adored wandering through the glass shops on the island of Murano in Italy, so I really need to venture to Kokomo (which is a much shorter trip!) to learn more about the art of glass making.

#74 Encounter the Life of a Hollywood Legend at the James Dean Gallery

James Dean is an icon many recognize, but I would love to learn more about the life of the Hollywood legend with Hoosier roots. So a trip to Fairmount, Indiana is in order.

#97 Trek Back in Time to the Historic Village of Metamora

I’ve already shared my affinity for quaint towns with lots of boutique shops and cute restaurants, so why haven’t I made it to Metamora yet? Great question! I’ll be rectifying this soon with a day trip to Metamora!
