Divine Daytrip to Blackhawk Winery in Sheridan, Indiana
I love daytrips! We don’t always have time or money to jet off on a major excursion. But I can still get that vacation-like euphoria with just a few hours exploring a new town or unique attraction not too far from home.
And I love wineries!
Indiana has 76 wineries, so that’s alot of opportunities for daytrips! This weekend we opted to check out just one, Blackhawk Winery, in Sheridan, Indiana. It is about 45 minutes north of Indianapolis.
This fairly new winery, established in 2011, is literally nestled in between two cornfields, so you might miss it if you aren’t looking.
I recently saw this winery on Facebook and signed up for their newsletter, which I highly recommend. The welcome email offered free wine tasting for up to 4 people.
They had me at free wine!
Blackhawk Winery sounded like the perfect spontaneous daytrip for this warm labor day weekend. And their newsletter let me know there would be live music and that we were welcome to bring our own food to enjoy with our wine.
Who doesn’t love a picnic with their hubby…and wine!
First we saddled up to the bar for our complimentary wine tasting. Regularly, wine tasting costs $5 for 5 tastings, but why not sign up for Blackhawk Winery’s newsletter and taste for free!
Our wine sommelier, Avery, was well educated about the wines and heavy with the pours. Exactly what I look for in a wine sommelier!
I am a sweet wine gal so I stuck with the sweet and sparkling varieties. I enjoyed just about every variety I tried. But my ultimate favorite was the Catawba.
My husband, Brent, on the other hand prefers dry red wines. Avery encouraged him to also try the dry whites and Brent realized he liked the white wines even better. He too enjoyed several of the wines he sampled, but the Triaminette (white) stole the show for him.
We bought a bottle of each of our favorites and then moved out to the covered patio to wait for the live music to start. The numerous chickens, roosters, and the large turkey roaming the grounds provided plenty of entertainment while we waited. We enjoyed our picnic of sandwiches, fruit, cheese, and crackers while sipping our wine and savoring a romantic evening together.
It turned out to be a fun and memorable daytrip that was fairly easy on the budget. Just $32 (two bottles of wine and a tip for Avery) and a little gas money.
We were happy to hear that Blackhawk Winery wines are available in several retail outlets in our area. We will be sure to enjoy these wines again, even if we don’t make it back to the winery for a while.
And with 76 wineries in Indiana, we still have plenty to check out!
Wherever the road takes you, make it a joyous journey,
